Pelli Butta Designs
Pelli butta or the ritual basket is popular in Telugu weddings. It is generally believed that the bride and the groom are representative of the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu respectively, during the wedding rituals.
And since the bride is Goddess Lakshmi, she is not to plant her feet on the ground. This means that the the uncles from the bride’s mother’s side carry her in the pelli butta towards the groom, waiting in the mandapam.
It is a colorful and entertaining part of the wedding ceremony, what with multi-coloured and designer pelli buttas capturing the imaginations of the would be brides of this millennium.
Pallakis/palkis are also used in place of pelli butta for carrying the bride.
The Tradition of Pelli Butta Bride Entry
The general tradition is for the maternal uncle to carry the bride in a basket to the mandap where the groom is waiting. The basket used to be traditionally made hand woven and made out of bamboo and the bride is not allowed to bring her feet on contact with the Earth, as the Gauri pooja is in progress or after it is over.
So, as the muhurtham approaches, the maternal uncles carry the bride to the mandap in the pelli butta. Once the bride has reached the mandap, she steps out of her pelli butta for the first time.
Now, it is not at all the simple bamboo pelli butta. But, as weddings have become more and more colourful, more and more entertaining, the pelli butta also has gone in for some transformation.
Even though the traditional pelli butta is used, for the sake of old times, there has been many designs inspired by nature in general. So, we have pelli butta designs that look like spread lotuses, birds like swan and peacocks that are not very uncommon these days.
